The Soul Trap

The gnostics have a unique view of life. They believe the devil created the world of the physical, which is inherently evil. The one true God created the spiritual world, the world we came from, and where we must work to return.
We are part of the one true God, spirits from the spiritual world, who are entrapped in the physical body by the devil, tricked, and seduced by physical pleasures, destined to return, lifetime after lifetime after lifetime. Of course, living on the physical plane has its benefits. We do live in a physical body that can be entertained and seduced in many different ways. This is how the devil keeps us coming back.
We get anchored in the physical by becoming attached to the things we enjoy, addictions we have developed, foods, sex, drugs, money, and anything else that tantalizes us when living the physical life.
But we never consider the spirit in all the joys of the devil's world. We never see ourselves as a spirit with a physical body; we see ourselves as the devil wants us to see ourselves as physical beings with a spirit. This sets us off with the wrong idea, leaving our spirit captive in the physical world, never to return to our true home, the spiritual plane, with the one true God.
Becoming attached to the physical world anchors us in it. When we die, we are caught up in the reincarnation cycle and eventually sent back to the physical because our soul has been seduced by physical "things" and is attached to the physical life. This is how the devil keeps souls in bondage, along with our spirits, serving him in a world of chaos and suffering.
Some of us have been taught that the soul and the spirit are the same; this must be clarified. Yes, the soul and the spirit are both made of spiritual energy, but the soul is attached to the body and lives the physical life while the spirit remains attached to the Source, and, with God, witnesses the soul's struggle.
But where the soul goes, the spirit goes. Even though the spirit is not attached to the body, it is connected to the soul, and if the soul cannot consciously detach from the body, the spirit and the soul become pawns for the Prince of Darkness.
I often wondered why monks would be high on a mountaintop away from other people. They were leaving the physical world behind, as much as physically possible. This is also a gnostic practice. The Essenes lived in communities away from others, as did the Cathars.
Monastic life was one of the pillars of their belief, "detachment." Even though the monks are Buddhists, the Essenes are Jews, and the Cathars are Christians, they all know the physical world is EVIL.
For those of you who doubt this gnostic belief, let me refer you to the words of Jesus and others:
"Jesus said, 'The ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me.'" (John 14:30)
"Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out." (John 12:31)
"Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe the Gospel." (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Can we now agree that the physical world is the world of the devil?
Most of us do not live on the mountaintop, where it is easy to be a holy man. We live in the middle of the devil's world, where hatred, violence, and complete chaos fill our lives.
It is impossible to escape corruption, lawlessness, and suffering. So what do we do?
We can meditate. In deep meditation, we are no longer in the physical world but in the spiritual world with The One True God.
Include meditation in your spiritual practice, as the monks, the Essenes, and the Cathars did.
Light the divine spark that dwells within you and fill your body with light.
