THE LOST SCIENCE OF KRIYA YOGA

Book Review: Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda

Few spiritual books have transformed as many lives or bridged as many worlds as Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. First published in 1946, this modern classic remains one of the most influential spiritual works of the twentieth century.

Through its pages, Yogananda not only recounts the story of his remarkable life but also opens a radiant doorway into the hidden spiritual science of India, the ancient discipline of Yoga, while revealing its deep harmony with the highest truths of all religions.

From the opening pages, Yogananda’s voice captivates with a rare blend of humility, wisdom, and humor. He begins with his childhood in India, describing his early longing for God and his tireless search for a true guru. These scenes, rich in vivid detail and tender emotion, are more than personal memories; they are archetypal moments of the soul’s awakening.

The young Yogananda’s meeting with his guru, the great master Sri Yukteswar, marks a pivotal turning point not only in his own life but also in the reader’s understanding of the spiritual path. Their relationship, at once intimate and profound, illuminates the timeless bond between disciple and teacher, a sacred dynamic that fuels the entire yogic journey.

Yet Autobiography of a Yogi is far more than a simple life story. It is a map of spiritual consciousness disguised as a memoir. As Yogananda leads readers through the ashrams, holy cities, and Himalayan retreats of India, he introduces a dazzling array of saints, mystics, and miracle-workers, each representing a facet of divine realization. We encounter Lahiri Mahasaya, the householder yogi who revived the lost science of Kriya Yoga;

Babaji, the deathless master who watches over humanity’s evolution from behind the veil of time, and numerous saints whose lives defy the laws of physics and biology.

These stories of levitation, bilocation, miraculous healing, and divine vision are not presented as myth, but as evidence of the latent spiritual powers that dwell within every human being.

For the skeptical reader, Yogananda’s sincerity and intellectual depth provide a compelling counterbalance to the book’s miraculous accounts. He does not ask for blind belief, but invites the reader to test truth through personal experience. “The true basis of religion,” he writes, “is not belief, but intuitive experience.”

This principle forms the book’s spiritual backbone. Yogananda’s mission, to bring the science of self-realization to the West, is grounded in this experiential approach. Through Kriya Yoga, he teaches that every soul can transcend the restless mind, awaken the inner light, and directly perceive the presence of God.

One of the book’s great strengths lies in its unifying vision. Yogananda reveals that the essence of Yoga is not confined to any culture or creed. He finds the same divine truth in the teachings of Christ, the Buddha, Krishna, and the sages of all ages. This universality gives the book a timeless relevance.

 It speaks to Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, and seekers of every path who sense that spirituality must go beyond ritual and dogma. His central message, that God is a living reality, knowable through meditation and love, resonates with a simplicity and authority that transcends theology.

Stylistically, Yogananda’s prose is both lyrical and precise. He writes with the luminous clarity of a poet who has glimpsed eternity, yet with the discipline of a scientist describing inner laws of consciousness. His language is rich but never obscure, devotional but never sentimental. Even the miraculous episodes are told with a matter-of-fact calm that lends them credibility.

 There is beauty in his restraint, as when he describes the stillness of meditation, the fragrance of divine joy, or the compassionate eyes of his guru. The reader senses that Yogananda speaks not from imagination, but from lived realization.
